Before I made my Front Cover, Contents Page and Double Page
spread for my magazine, I had to think about the genre of magazine and what
type of pictures I was going to take. I decided to make an Indie Magazine,
because Indie is my favourite type of music and I think there is a lack of indie
music magazines out there, so I wanted to give myself a challenge. I then
looked at existing indie magazines and created a mood board while mainly
looking at front covers, and in most of the ones I saw, the front covers were
very minimal and the music artists mentioned were all very ‘indie’.
I then began to plan my photoshoot and I picked my model. On
the day I decided to take most of my photos outside because most pictures of
indie singers are usually taken against a brick wall or in an outside setting. I
also took some photos in front of a green screen, but in the end I decided not
to use them because they ruined the look of my magazine and they did not match
up to the quality of the photos I had taken outside.
I then selected my photos very carefully, and mainly picked
the photos that had some space in them, so there would be space for text. Before putting the text on Photoshop, I had to
adjust the brightness/contrast on the photos, and I also used selective colour
which enhanced certain colours. Other effects I used was the blur effect,
because I wanted my model to be the centre of attention of my photos, and
because the background of some of my photos (e.g. double page spread) had an
extremely distracting background, so had
to blur it out slightly. I also used a gradient on my contents page so my
models face was the focus. In addition, I used the dodge tool to enhance the
brightness of my models eyes, so the quality of the photos were improved.
When I started adding text, I had to think about what types
of fonts would be appropriate for my genre and I used the website Dafont to get
a lot of my scripted fonts. I wanted my text to look moulded around my model,
so I used the rubber tool to erase the parts of the text which were overlapping
my model, and the end result looked like I had put my model on top of the text
and that it was behind it. One problem occurred with my text, which was that it
looked extremely washed out against each image, so I decided to make a border
around the text so it would stand out a lot more, and the colour of my borders
were mainly different shades of purple because that was part of my colour
scheme. I also added a drop shadow behind the text, so it would stand out eve
more.
